Struggles with Substance Abuse in Childhood

Corey Taylor was born in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1973, and raised in Waterloo by his single mother. On his mother’s side, he has Irish and Dutch heritage, while on his father’s side, he has Irish, German, and Native American ancestry. Taylor acquired an early interest in masks and horror themes after watching the trailer for the 1978 horror film “Halloween.” Meanwhile, his grandma exposed him to rock music by showing him a collection of Elvis Presley albums.

Taylor had been hooked to controlled drugs by the age of 15, and had twice overdosed on cocaine. His grandma took him into formal care and purchased him musical instruments. Taylor struggled with drug addiction and mental illness for the rest of his life, even attempted suicide at the age of 18.

Stone Sour

Taylor and drummer Joel Ekman formed Stone Sour, a hard rock band, in 1992. Shawn Economaki joined as the bassist shortly after, while Josh Rand took over as the electric guitarist. In 1993, the band released a demo album, followed by another the following year. Taylor was contacted by the metal band Slipknot when the group was producing a new demo album, forcing him to briefly quit Stone Sour. Five years later, he returned for the group’s self-titled first album, which debuted at number 46 on the Billboard 200 in 2002. The band’s second album, “Come What(ever) May,” was even more successful, debuting at number four on the Billboard 200 in 2006. “Audio Secrecy,” which debuted at number six on the list four years later, was the follow-up.

“House of Gold & Bones,” a concept double album, is one of Stone Sour’s other endeavors. The first installment was published in the autumn of 2012, and the second installment was released in the spring of 2013. Taylor also created a four-part comic book series for Dark Horse Comics as a supplement.

Taylor was persuaded to join Slipknot by Joey Jordison, Mick Thomson, and Shawn Crahan while still a member of Stone Sour in 1997. He has been the band’s permanent lead singer since the publication of its second demo CD. Slipknot’s self-titled first album was published in 1999, and it reached number one on the Top Heatseekers list and went double Platinum in the United States. In 2001, “Iowa” debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart and at number three on the US Billboard 200. “Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses),” released in 2004, was the group’s first album to use more conventional melodic song patterns and acoustic arrangements. Slipknot won a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance for the song “Before I Forget,” which reached number two on the Billboard 200.

“All Hope is Gone,” Slipknot’s first number one album on the Billboard 200, was released in 2008. The CD also marks the band’s last appearance with its original configuration. Slipknot’s subsequent albums include “.5: The Gray Chapter,” which earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best Rock Album in 2014, and “We Are Not Your Kind,” which debuted at number one on both the UK Albums Chart and the US Billboard 200 for the band’s third straight year.
