Ella Mai, an R&B singer and songwriter with a casually commanding voice, wasn’t exactly a household name before DJ Mustard signed her to his 10 Summers label in 2018, but the U.K. native broke through with her breakout single “Boo’d Up,” a sparkling slow jam that grew in popularity throughout the year. The song paved the way for her self-titled debut album, which debuted in the Top Five in October and was quickly followed by a Grammy victory for Best R&B Song.
Ella Mai Howell was born in southwest London and relocated to New York when she was 12 years old. After graduating from high school, she returned to England. She auditioned for The X Factor in 2014 as part of a trio called Arize while studying the British and Irish Modern Music Institute in London, but the group didn’t make it beyond the first round and eventually disbanded. Ella Mai released a solo EP of originals on SoundCloud the following year, as well as snippets of cover songs on Instagram. The latter drew the attention of producer DJ Mustard, who confirmed Mai’s signing to his Interscope-distributed 10 Summers label in January 2016.
Time, a poised EP of elegant, modern R&B, was Mai’s official debut the following month. The six-track EP, which included the Ty Dolla $ign duet “She Don’t,” revealed an artist who could sing with a razor’s edge about strong devotion and vicious spite. Change, released in November 2016, and Ready, released four months later, were Mai’s next two Mustard-assisted EPs. Ready’s “Boo’d Up,” a love ballad evocative of R&B’s pre-new jack swing era, debuted at number five on the Billboard Hot 100 in April 2018 and remained there for three months, an exceptionally lengthy period of ascension. In October, Ella Mai released her self-titled debut album, and “Trip” came as “Boo’d Up” started to fall off the list, reaching number 11 in October. Ella Mai debuted at number five on the Billboard 200 with her two greatest singles to that time. “Boo’d Up” was nominated for Grammys in the categories of Song of the Year (one of the “Big Four”) and Best R&B Song; she won the latter at the early 2019 event. Ella Mai earned a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Album later that year. Mai stayed very quiet until the release of the song “Not Another Love Song” in October 2020, except from a cameo appearance on Ed Sheeran’s “Put It All on Me.”
