Don't Be Cruel Teddy Riley, the founder, multi-instrumentalist, and super-producer of this pioneering R&B band, is credited with inventing the new jack swing sound, which is basically classic soul vocals fused with hip-hop rhythms. Riley started his first band, Wreckx-N-Effect, with siblings Markell Riley and Brandon Mitchell while he was still a teenager, and Guy joined a few years later in 1987. Aaron Hall and Timmy Gatling were the band’s original singers. The R&B singles “I Like,” “Groove Me,” “Spend the Night,” and “Teddy’s Jam” came from their self-titled first album, which was an immediate success. Meanwhile, Riley was in high demand as a composer and producer; Riley produced Bobby Brown’s Don’t Be Cruel in 1988, which enabled new jack swing break into the pop mainstream. Riley has also collaborated with a number of artists, including Kool Moe Dee, Michael Jackson (Dangerous), Stevie Wonder, Keith Sweat, Jane Child, and SWV. Guy contributed songs to the soundtracks of Do the Right Thing and New Jack City in the time between albums.

The Future By 1989, Guy was in disarray; Riley’s brother Brandon Mitchell was murdered in a shooting, and the band was embroiled in a bitter financial feud with manager Gene Griffin. Albert Damion Hall, Hall’s brother, replaced Gatling in 1990’s The Future, which produced R&B songs including “Let’s Chill,” “Do Me Right,” “D-O-G Me Out,” and “Long Gone.” Riley and Guy, on the other hand, had split up by the time they began to get media recognition for their creative and groundbreaking work. Riley spent many years focusing on his music production and composition before creating Blackstreet with singers Chauncey “Black” Hannibal, Dave Hollister, and Levi Little. In 1994, the trio published their self-titled debut. Aaron Hall’s solo debut, The Truth, was published in 1993, while Damion Hall’s Straight to the Point was released in 1994. Guy reformed in 1999 and released Guy III the following year.
