Hayko Cepkin is a Turkish singer, songwriter and musician. He is best known for his songs Sarı Gelin and Yandim Yandım.
Despite his renegade image in the Turkish heavy music scene, Hayko Cepkin is a trained musician. Cepkin, who was born in Istanbul in 1978, studied singing at Mimar Sinan University and subsequently studied singing and music theory at Timur Selcuk Contemporary Music Center. He began his professional musical career in 1997, after studying piano at the Akademi Istanbul. Cepkin has contributed to many albums as a keyboardist, composer, and arranger, and has collaborated with a diverse group of artists, including Koray Candemir, Demir Demirkan, Aylin Aslim, and Ogun Sanlisoy.
Cepkin chose to release his own music after gaining expertise for many years, and composed, performed, and produced his debut — Sakin Olmam Lazim (I Need to Stay Calm), published in 2005 by EMI Turkey — completely on his own. The tunes included a broad range of ethnic influences and were mostly centered on keyboards. Cepkin’s first album received good reviews, combining rock, techno, and Arabesque (a type of Turkish folk music that is primarily a working-class musical style). The debut was like the calm before the storm when contrasted to his later work. He didn’t wait long, however, and gathered his ideas for use in music videos and live performances. Cepkin went on to win Best Rock Male Singer at the Kral TV Music Awards, one of Turkey’s most significant music award shows, after touring the country for the next several years.
In 2007, Cepkin released his second album, Tanisma Bitti (Introduction Is Over). The album’s title gave the first hint as to what to anticipate from it. Nearly every song had an orchestral opening that went well with the primary theme: “horror.” Heavier and more violent on one hand, atmospheric and grandiose on the other, almost every song had an orchestral introduction that worked well with the major theme: “horror.” His singles “Yalniz Kalsin,” “Bertaraf Et,” and “Melekler,” as well as their visuals, established him as one of the most popular figures in Turkish rock. Following the album’s release, further shows were scheduled. Cepkin also appeared in the children’s film ocuk and composed music for the horror movie Araf.
