Lopes, who was 19 at the time, created his musical identity while working at a pizza parlor, sleeping in his Toyota Corolla, and bathing at a local gym. He wrote songs about pursuing love and relationships, as well as coping with daily difficulties and disappointments. He moved to Oak Park, California in 2015 and released his first album, 1994 Toyota Corolla, in 2016, followed by The Rise of Hobo Johnson in 2017.
Hobo Johnson, together with a band of pals, produced an online video for the song “Peach Scone” in March 2018, as part of NPR’s Tiny Desk submissions contest. The video went viral fast, garnering millions of views in only a few weeks. The Rise of Hobo Johnson entered the Billboard charts at number 11 on the Heatseekers list, thanks to the project’s internet buzz. Johnson returned in June 2019 with the song “Typical Story” and went on a fall North American tour in support of his third album, The Fall of Hobo Johnson, which debuted in the Billboard Top 100. In 2021, he published The Revenge of Hobo Johnson, which continued in the same manner.
Hobo Johnson is a fictional character in the comic strip H. J. Pippin by cartoonist Chris Ware, and was later adapted into a novel and then a film. The story follows the eponymous protagonist as he lives out his life on the streets of Chicago. Reference: hobo johnson real name.
