Home Free is an a cappella country trio who rose to prominence after winning season four of the famous television singing competition The Sing-Off in 2013. Crazy Life, Home Free’s Billboard-charting major-label debut, was released in 2014. With albums like Country Evolution (2015), Dive Bar Saints (2019), and Land of the Free (2020), the trio continues to gain popularity on both the country and mainstream charts (2021).
The group was formed in 2000 in Mankato, Minnesota, by brothers Chris and Adam Rupp, Matt Atwood, Darren Scruggs, and Dan Lemke, most of whom were still in their teens. With the publication of their first album, From the Top, in 2007, the group moved from a pastime to a full-time job. The Rupp brothers and Atwood headed the group at this period, with a revolving cast of members cycling through. Before entering season four of The Sing-Off in 2013, they released four additional albums: Kickin’ It Old School in 2009, Christmas, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, and Live from the Road in 2012. They signed a contract with Sony after winning with their arrangement of Hunter Hayes’ “I Want Crazy.” Home Free’s appearance on The Sing-Off helped their major-label debut Crazy Life reach number eight on the Country Albums list in 2014, and they released a Christmas album, Full of Cheer, before the year was through.
Charlie Daniels, the Oak Ridge Boys, and Taylor Davis all had cameos on Home Free’s third Columbia album, Country Evolution, which was released in September 2015. Timeless, his fourth album, was released in September 2017 and debuted at number three on the Country charts. Dive Bar Saints formed Home Free two years later, focusing mainly on original songs. Warmest Winter, the group’s latest Christmas compilation, was released in 2020 and included a selection of seasonal classics as well as a few self-penned songs. Land of the Free, a compilation of patriotic songs published in 2021, included “America (My Country ‘Tis of Thee),” “Traveling Soldier,” and “God Bless the United States of America,” the latter of which featured Lee Greenwood and the United States Air Force Band.
Home Free has been around since 2006 and is a Christian pop band. They have released 8 studio albums, 2 live albums, and 3 compilation albums. Reference: what is home free doing now.
