Jane Olivor is an American singer-songwriter and actress. She has released four albums and is best known for her song “I’m a Little Teapot.” Her songs have been featured in the TV show Glee, as well as on the soundtrack of the film Pitch Perfect 2.
Jane Cohen of Brooklyn, New York, transformed herself into French-style cabaret singer Jane Olivor in the early 1970s in the downtown Manhattan club scene. Olivor built a following among gay men and other fans of traditional pop, transforming songs like “Some Enchanted Evening” from the Broadway musical South Pacific and the Fleetwoods’ 1959 hit “Come Softly to Me” into personal statements at venues like the Greenwich Village nightclub Reno Sweeney’s and the Garment District supper cl Her popularity grew to the point that Columbia Records signed her and released her first album, First Night, in 1976. Despite good critical reviews, the album failed to chart, but “Some Enchanted Evening” earned a small singles chart entry soon before the release of her second album, Chasing Rainbows, in September 1977, which hit the Top 100 bestsellers and stayed there for three months. Olivor started to appear at major music venues around the country as a result of this.
Stay the Night, released in the spring of 1978, contained Olivor’s rendition of the Chiffons’ 1963 smash “He’s So Fine,” a modest chart entry that showed a little increase in her chart performance. She then performed “The Last Time I Felt Like This,” the theme from the 1978 film Same Time Next Year, in a duet with Johnny Mathis. The song reached the Top 20 on the easy listening charts, and Mathis and Olivor performed it at the Academy Awards when it was nominated for Best Song. By this time, Olivor was performing in famous venues such as the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, Carnegie Hall in New York, and others. The Best Side of Goodbye, released in the winter of 1980, was her highest-charting album to that point. She taped gigs at the Berklee School of Music in Boston in December 1981, and her fifth album, In Concert, was released in the spring of 1982.
Olivor took a one-year vacation from performing due to stage fear, concerns about the pace with which her career was rising, and negative encounters in the music industry. She married, but her husband was afflicted with cancer shortly after, and she left her job to care for him; he died in 1986. Meanwhile, she was embroiled in a legal battle with Columbia about money she believed she owed. She didn’t perform again until 1993, when she discovered she had a devoted following throughout the nation. She gradually became more active, and in the autumn of 2000, Varèse Sarabande Records released Love Decides, her first new studio album in almost 20 years. In the autumn of 2001, she released Songs of the Season, a Christmas compilation.
