Guy collaborated with Lucky Millinder’s, Charlie Barnet’s, and Cootie Williams’ large bands (he pushed Williams to utilize some of Monk’s works in 1942). During the years 1945-46, he was inextricably linked to Billie Holiday (both musically and emotionally). Joe Guy, on the other hand, was finally nabbed for drug possession, and nothing more was heard from him after 1947. At the age of 41, he died in obscurity in his hometown of Birmingham.
