Joe Guy is an American singer, songwriter, and musician. He was born in Chicago on November 1st, 1936. He has released over 30 albums and has worked with many artists including Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, and Keith Richards.
Joe Guy had a strange and short career. Guy was a talented trumpeter whose style was largely inspired by Roy Eldridge and looked forward to bop. However, owing to his heroin usage, he never progressed past a certain degree of development, and the consequences, although hot, were always unsettling. Guy was a major soloist with the short-lived Coleman Hawkins big band in 1940 and briefly with Teddy Hill’s Orchestra in 1938 (succeeding Dizzy Gillespie). Guy was a regular at Minton’s Playhouse from 1940 to 1942, and he performed on a number of secretly recorded (and subsequently published) jam sessions. Guy collaborated with Lucky Millinder’s, Charlie Barnet’s, and Cootie Williams’ large bands (he pushed Williams to utilize some of Monk’s works in 1942). During the years 1945-46, he was inextricably linked to Billie Holiday (both musically and emotionally). Joe Guy, on the other hand, was finally nabbed for drug possession, and nothing more was heard from him after 1947. At the age of 41, he died in obscurity in his hometown of Birmingham.
