Details of Joe Maddon’s career

Son of a young Italian father, Joe Sr. (who abbreviated Maddonini’s name), and a Polish mother, Maddon grew up in a shared apartment above his father’s quest for plumbing. His father died in 2002.

Maddon attended Lafayette College where he played baseball and soccer. He graduated in 1976 and is a member of the Zeta Psi fraternity. He received an honorary doctorate from the Lafayette faculty on Sept. 2, 2010.

Maddon began his veteran career in minor league baseball as a catcher. He joined the California Angels as a free agent in 1975. Maddon failed to make it through all four of his Class A seasons. He began his career with the Quad Cities Angels in 1976, where he batted .294 and went 163 games undefeated in fifty games. He then spent two seasons with the Salinas Angels and one with the Santa Clara Padres. In four seasons, he never had more than 180 at-bats in a season, and the most home runs he ever hit was 3 for the Salinas Angels in 1977. He hit a total of 5 home runs in 514 years.

In total, Maddon worked for the Angels’ organization for thirty-one years, in addition to being bush league director, scout, bush league touchdown teacher and coach of the league’s advanced team.

In 1979, after spending four seasons as a receiver in the Angels organization, Maddon decided to devote himself to his career and become an instructor. He began as a scout and then held positions as director in the Angels’ farm system and coach of the traveling league.

As coach of the Bush League, he scored 279-339 in six seasons, leading the freshman class from 1981 to 1986, with each team suffering one defeat. As a coach, he led the Idaho Falls Rookie Angels (1981), Class A Rookie Angels (1982-1983), Class A Peoria Chiefs (1984), and Class AA Midland Angels (1985-1986), among others. From 1987 to 1993, Maddon was a touring coach in the Bush League and was then promoted to coach a Massive League club.

Maddon coached the Angels major league from 1994 to 2005. He was a three-time first base coach, bench coach and interim manager, following John McNamara’s departure in 1996, Terry Collins’ dismissal in 1998 and Collins’ eventual departure in 1999. He ended his stint as interim manager with an overall record of twenty-seven wins and twenty-four losses. He also served under Marcel Lashman from 1993 to 1994, and while he was on the bench as a coach under McNamara and Collins, he usually switched positions. He finally found stability after the Angels contracted Mike Scioscia in 1999. By the time Maddon left Anaheim, he had spent a total of thirty-one years with the Angels organization.
