Early years

Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta is a model and actress. was born to an upper middle class Catholic family on March 28, 1986, at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan, New York City. Her parents are both of Italian descent. Her parents are philanthropist and business executive Cynthia Louise (née Bissett) and Internet entrepreneur Joseph Germanotta, and she has a younger sister called Natali. Gaga, who grew up on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, stated in an interview that her parents came from lower-income households and worked hard for everything. She went to the Convent of the Sacred Heart, a private all-girls Roman Catholic school, from the age of eleven. Gaga recalls being “extremely serious, very studious, very disciplined” in high school, but also “a little insecure.” She saw herself as an outcast, and she was teased for “being either too provocative or too quirky.”

When Gaga was four years old, her mother demanded that she learn to play the piano so that she might become “a sophisticated young lady.” Throughout her youth, she took piano lessons and practiced. The courses taught her how to compose music by ear rather than reading sheet music, which she preferred. Her parents supported her musical ambitions and enrolled her in Creative Arts Camp. She used to perform at open mic evenings when she was a youngster. At Regis High School, Gaga portrayed Adelaide in the play Guys and Dolls and Philia in the play A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. She also spent eleven years studying method acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute. Gaga auditioned for New York plays but was cast in a minor part as a high school kid in a 2001 episode of The Sopranos called “The Telltale Moozadell.” She subsequently spoke of her musical proclivity:

I’m not sure where my love of music comes from, but it’s the thing that comes naturally to me. My mom usually recounts this incredibly humiliating tale about me propping myself up and playing the keys like this since I was too little and short to climb all the way up there when I was like three years old, maybe even younger. Just play the bottom end of the keyboard like this… I was a natural musician and a natural pianist, so my initial inclinations were to practice piano as much as possible. I wasn’t a natural dancer, but I was a natural musician. That is the skill I think I possess the most.

Gaga received early admission to Collaborative Arts Project 21, a music school at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, when she was 17 years old, and resided in an NYU dorm. She majored in music and wrote articles on art, religion, social concerns, and politics, including a thesis on pop artists Spencer Tunick and Damien Hirst, to develop her songwriting talents. She dropped out of school in the second semester of her second year in 2005 to concentrate on her music career. She also appeared in MTV’s Boiling Points, a hoax reality program, as an unknowing restaurant customer that year.

Gaga said in a 2014 interview that she was raped at the age of 19 and went through mental and physical rehabilitation as a result. She suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which she relates to the experience, and she traces her recovery to the care of physicians, family, and friends. “The guy who raped me threw me off pregnant on a corner outside my parents’ home because I was vomiting and unwell,” Gaga later said of the rape. Because I’d been mistreated for a long time. For months, I was confined to a studio.”

Themes and musical styles

Gaga’s musical and performance style has been questioned by critics as she has experimented with various concepts and imagery throughout her career. She describes her constant reinvention as “liberating” herself, something she has wanted to do since she was a youngster. Gaga is a contralto singer with a range of B2 to B5. Her vocal approach has evolved over time, and she believes Born This Way to be “far more vocally up to pace with what I’ve always been capable of.” “There’s an amazing emotional intelligence behind the way she utilizes her voice,” Entertainment Weekly said of her voice. She almost never uses her vocal skills to overpower a song, instead knowing that creativity is found in delicacy rather than lung force.”

Gaga’s songs have been called “depthless” by writer Camille Paglia in The Sunday Times, but according to Evan Sawdey of PopMatters, she “does manage to get you moving and grooving at an almost effortless pace”. Gaga believes that “all good music can be played on a piano and still sound like a hit”. Simon Reynolds wrote in 2010, “Everything about Gaga came from electroclash, except the music, which wasn’t particularly 1980s, just ruthlessly catchy naughties pop glazed with Auto-Tune and undergirded with R&B-ish beats.”

Gaga’s songs have explored a broad range of topics; The Fame explores the desire for celebrity, while The Fame Monster explores the negative side of fame using monster analogies. The Fame is an electropop and dance-pop album with inspirations from 1980s pop and 1990s Europop, while The Fame Monster is a parody of “Seventies arena glam, peppy ABBA disco, and saccharine throwbacks like Stacey Q,” demonstrating Gaga’s propensity for pastiche. Born This Way incorporates lyrics in English, French, German, and Spanish, and includes themes such as sex, love, religion, money, drugs, identity, liberty, sexuality, freedom, and individuality that are characteristic to Gaga’s controversial songwriting. New genres, such as electronic rock and techno, are explored on the album.

The themes in Artpop revolve around Gaga’s personal views of fame, love, sex, feminism, self-empowerment, overcoming addiction, and reactions to media scrutiny. Billboard describes Artpop as “coherently channeling R&B, techno, disco and rock music”. With Cheek to Cheek, Gaga dabbled in the jazz genre. Joanne, exploring the genres of country, funk, pop, dance, rock, electronic music and folk, was influenced by her Personal Experiences. The A Star Is Born soundtrack contains elements of blues rock, country and bubblegum pop. Billboard says its lyrics are about wanting change, its struggle, love, romance, and bonding, describing the music as “timeless, emotional, gritty and earnest. They sound like songs written by artists who, quite frankly, are supremely messed up but hit to the core of the listener.” On Chromatica, Gaga returned to her dance-pop roots, and discussed her struggles with mental health. Her second album with Tony Bennett, Love for Sale, consists of a tribute to Cole Porter.
