Rea has inked a contract with Team Go Eleven Kawasaki for the 2017 World Supersport Championship. Throughout the season, a string of technical issues and uncompetitive equipment culminated in a career-low 17th place finish in the Championship, with a best finish of 6th in Misano, Italy. Gino did not finish on the podium for the first time in World Supersport racing.

To stay in World Supersport, Rea joined with a newly created team called GRT Racing in 2016, switching bike manufacturers to MV Agusta. Rea was able to regularly defeat the MV Agusta Factory World Supersport Team, landing on the podium three times with a best result of second in Assen, Netherlands, despite minimal testing and race DNFs due to engine problems. Rea was fourth in the World Championship standings heading into the last two races of the season, however he was forced to withdraw from both races due to an accident with Japanese rider Hikari Obkubo, which resulted in a fractured left hand. Rea was eventually relegated to seventh place in the 2016 series standings.

Rea’s year was up and down, and he didn’t make the improvement he desired, although he did finish on the podium in Sepang, Malaysia. Rea reached the finish line first, but when the red flag flew, the results were pushed back two laps, depriving him of the victory but keeping him in second place. Gino was battling for a podium place with Moto2 World Champion Marc Marquez in the last race of the year, but he crashed at turn 2. Rea returned to 11th place in the Final Points standings, placing 21st overall.

Rea remained in the World Supersport Championship in 2011, and despite many retirements due to technical problems and accidents, he won his first World Championship in Brno, defeating ex-World Champion Fabien Foret and 2011 World Champion Chaz Davies.
