Alan Kalter Biography – Alan Kalter Wiki

Alan Kalter was an American television announcer who was most known for his work on David Letterman’s Late Show. He was also the presenter of Alan Kalter’s Celebrity Interview, which aired alongside The Late Show. He took over the opening introductions on CBS’s “Late Show with David Letterman” from Bill Wendell’s retirement in September 1995 until Letterman’s last show on May 20, 2015, earning the nickname “Big Red” for his hair.

At the beginning of each program, Kalter announced the guests and cheekily introduced the host, then delivered the comedic one-liner over the Worldwide Pants title card end credits, with musical accompaniment from Paul Shaffer and the CBS Orchestra. In the meantime, Kalter appeared in a number of comedic skits, including presenting “Alan Kalter’s Celebrity Interview” after Letterman had finished with his guest and was speaking from his announcer’s podium.

He repeated his announcing role for Letterman in 2017 when the former late-night host was honored with the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at the Kennedy Center, and he featured in a Letterman documentary, “David Letterman: A Life on Television,” in 2015.

Kalter was a well-known voiceover artist and spokesperson for companies such as Gillette, Michelin, CBS Cares, New York Mega Million, and the announcer for the USA Network’s “Commander USA’s Groovie Movies” before joining the “Late Show.” “The $10,000 Pyramid,” “The $25,000 Pyramid,” “The Money Maze,” “To Tell The Truth” – where he again replaced Wendell – and the 2003 Grammy Awards are among his other notable announcing gigs.

Alan Robert Kalter was born on March 21, 1943, in Brooklyn, New York, and grew up in the New York suburbs of LittleNeck and Cedarhurst. He graduated from Hobart College in Geneva, New York, in 1964, and subsequently went to NYU Law School. He spent three years teaching English and public speaking at a Long Island high school before starting his broadcasting career at WHN.

Alan Kalter passed away.

Alan Kalter, who was 78 years old at the time, died on October 4, 2021. He died with his wife, Peggy Masterson, and his two children at his side at Stamford Hospital in Connecticut, according to Rabbi Joshua Hammerman of Temple Beth El, the synagogue Kalter frequented.

Alan was a former president of TBE and a genuine mensch, who was profoundly dedicated to Jewish ideals and the Jewish people, and was particularly devoted to this, his home town, according to Hammerman in a statement. “He attended our daily Zoom minyan with such zeal over the last year that he even participated in from the golf course at Rockrimmon.”

“When our 15-year announcer Bill Wendell resigned, producer Robert Morton came to my office with an audiotape of numerous announcer tryouts. Alan’s voice was the first and only one we heard. Letterman stated in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, “We knew he’d be our pick.”

“Whatever else we had, we always had the greatest television announcer. He has a great voice and is ready to portray a funny role. Isn’t it true that he can sing? Yes, he is capable. He performed everything with zeal. “It’s been a sad day, but I’ve made a lot of wonderful memories.”

“To us ‘Late Show’ writers Alan was so much more than just the ‘From New York…’ guy,” said Carter Bays, who went on to co-create “How I Met Your Mother.” He was our inspiration. We like writing for him since he was such a bright presence on the program. Also in the workplace. Big Red, take it easy.”

“Oh man, @CarterBays and I loved writing for Alan – some of my greatest memories of Late Show are the batshit-bonkers pieces we wrote for Alan, who was always willing to let us make him seem insane…” said Bays’ writing partner, fellow “HIMYM” co-creator Craig Thomas. Alan, may you rest in peace and thank you for the laughs.”

He was a member of Temple Beth El in Stamford. On Wednesday, October 6, 2021, a private funeral will be conducted in the Stamford synagogue and will be live-streamed. Instead of flowers or food baskets, the family prefers memorial contributions to Temple Beth El/Mitzvah Rabbi’s Fund, SilverSource in Stamford, or a charity of your choice.
